Last night I think the guesthouse shifted on its foundation. What they probably call a fair wind up here would have folks heading for their tornado shelters back home. It rained most of the night and this morning, as I went outside, the first suitcase promptly blew away. Fortunately it was one of the girls, so it only got across the parking lot before the 50-odd pounds of clothes anchored it safely in the mud near a trash can. Several harrowing trips later, the car was full and we were headed off for the famous Golden Circle, to see the aptly named Geysir (it's a geyser) and Gullfoss, a two-tiered waterfall with a flimsy protective rope and a few small signs with a symbol showing someone falling to their death in a milky boil of glacial runnoff. Afterward, lunch consisted of lamb soup and paninis at the gift shop before we hit the road again toward Reykjavic.
The capitol is a smartly dressed little town with a Scandinavian design personality and a downtown full of shops, pubs, coffee shops and skinny jeans. We found a WiFi cafe and set up shop for a few hours to do some work, check in back home and have a latte before heading to dinner, where a debate ensued about the ethics of eating Minke whale steaks over pizza. Now we're at the airport, kronars traded in for Euros and a fresh bag of Toblerone from the Duty Free shop, waiting for a 1 am flight to Paris. The volcano erupted again today causing a bit of drama about flight schedules. But for now at least the flight is on time and we read it's sunny there. Bon temps.
